CAPE TOWN - People Against Gangsterism and Drugs (Pagad) on Friday said it has been inundated with calls from Athlone residents asking it to intervene in the area.

The area has been hit by crime.

Pagad's Osman Sahib says there has been a sudden spike in crime and violence across the greater Athlone area, especially in Bridgetown.

He says the anti-crime group will embark on an urgent motorcade in the area later on Friday to create awareness around the problem.

"Due to the escalation of violence and murder in the greater Athlone area, the Pagad movement will conduct a motorcade this evening. We are hoping to get the support of the people, especially from the Athlone community."

Over 30 people have been killed in gang violence in various Cape Town communities in recent months.

Provincial government officials called on national government and communities to help fight the scourge.
