CAPE TOWN - A security guard was shot and killed in a foiled cash-in-transit heist in Monte Vista, Cape Town police confirmed on Friday.

It is understood a group of armed suspects tried to rob a security van in the northern suburb earlier in the day.

Police spokesperson Tembinkosi Kinana says the suspects fled empty-handed.

"During the incident, one security guard was fatally wounded. We have opened a case of murder and armed robbery for investigation."

At the same time, the City of Cape Town says a policeman and a suspected gang member have been arrested in connection with a house robbery in Parow.

Law enforcement officials were alerted and found a group of people assaulting the two men.

They allegedly robbed the home on Thursday.

Bystanders handed over a police identification card and a plastic gun to the officials.

One of the men was an officer at the Elsies River police station, the city's JP Smith said.

"It is a great concern. Anytime there's collusion between police and the criminals, it takes us backward."
