NGO urges mothers not to abandon kids
Impact Baby Rescue Centre says three children are abandoned in Johannesburg a day.
JOHANNESBURG - Non-profit organisation Impact Baby Rescue Centre is encouraging young mothers living in Diepsloot not to abandon their unwanted children, but to rather drop them off at its place of safety.
Last week, a woman in the area threw her baby in a stream while twin babies were also discovered in Krugersdorp.
Founder Richard Franzen says they were alarmed by the number of children who were abandoned on a daily basis, and this forced them to act and give children a safe home.
"When you are in these communities you can't help but see the issues the children and the young moms are facing and hearing the horror stories about babies being abandoned."
The NGO says on average three children are abandoned in Johannesburg a day.
The haven, situated inside Diepsloot, has created a baby safe environment where young mothers can drop off their children without anyone knowing.
The mother of the baby has not yet been identified.
