Maimane calls for govt transparency
Mmusi Maimane said money continues to be misused by government departments.
JOHANNESBURG - Democratic Alliance (DA) Gauteng premier candidate Mmusi Maimane says transparency and accountability is needed in government to ensure projects such as the Diepsloot Police Station meet their deadlines.
Maimane visited the area on Tuesday following last week's double murder of cousins Yonelisa (2) and Zandile (3) Mali.
The little girls were raped and murdered and dumped in a communal toilet.
Maimane said the Public Works Department needs the right leadership to make sure tasks are completed on time.
The DA politician said money continues to be misused by government departments.
"This is taxpayers' money, it doesn't fall from the sky, it's money that people of this province have worked hard to earn."
He added the people involved should be dealt with decisively when projects don't materialise.
The Diepsloot Police Station was supposed to be completed years ago, but problems were encountered with contractors and construction was stopped.
A deadline has been set for next year August.
