JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB)'s chairperson Landiwe Mahlangu to step down from his position and declare his interests in the Midvaal merger.

Last week, the MDB confirmed that the Midvaal region, the only DA-run municipality in Gauteng, would be merged with Emfuleni and Sedibeng.

The opposition party has vowed to challenge the decision in court.

The MDB said it would fight back.

It insists the decision is aimed at modernising the region and improving the delivery of services to residents.

But the DA's Gauteng premier candidate Mmusi Maimane now says Mahlangu holds a conflict of interest in the process.

It's understood Mahlangu is a non-executive member of a company called Sea Kay Holdings Limited, which is involved in the construction of 1,500 low-cost government homes in the Emfuleni region.

"We believe that this conflict has had a serious impact on what has happened in the merger," says Maimane.

The board has so far received 10,000 objections to the merger.
