Police hunt for mom of dumped baby
Police say they'll visit hospitals in the province to determine which babies were born in recent weeks.
JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng police say they will be visiting hospitals in the province to determine which babies were born in recent weeks.
This is part of an investigation to find out the whereabouts of an unidentified woman, who dumped her newborn baby in a local stream in Diepsloot extension 6, on Saturday morning.
The child's body was found by police and a case of murder is being investigated
The woman, who is believed to be from Diepsloot extension 4, may have fled the area.
Police say they are tracing hospital records and conducting DNA tests on the infant's body and hope to make an arrest soon.
The police's Oswald Reddy says anyone with information on the whereabouts of the woman should come forward.
"We're appealing to the community if they know of someone who was pregnant and had given birth, but no longer has the child, to let us know. We estimate the child is less than 15 days old."
"We think the child was born in the hospital therefore someone in the area should know something."
This was the latest murder involving children in Gauteng.
Four other children have been found murdered in Diepsloot and Katlehong in the last week, raising questions about child neglect and safety.
