Mob victims 'tried' to rob tavern
Khayelitsha residents allege a group of men who were killed on Sunday were trying to rob a local tavern.
CAPE TOWN - Eyewitnesses who saw the violent attack on alleged criminals in Khayelitsha say the men were planning to rob a tavern in the area for the second time.
Police have confirmed that three of the men were stoned to death in the area on Sunday.
Residents say the group robbed the tavern last weekend.
This resident explains that someone noticed some of them and alerted the owner, who then allegedly mobilised community members who attacked the group.
"They were planning to rob again this week. Some customers here recognised them from last week.
"They told the owner and soon after they were surrounded by people who beat them up."
Over 20 people have been killed by angry mobs in Khayelitsha in recent months.
In 2012, Premier Helen Zille set up a commission of inquiry to investigate vigilante killings in the area.
Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa went to the Constitutional Court in a bid to prevent the commission from going ahead.
However, he lost the case.
The commission will continue with its work to get to the bottom of mob killings.
