JOHANNESBURG - The Broader Westonaria Concerned Residents Association on Saturday expressed serious concerns about the situation in Bekkersdal.

The area has been plagued with a series of continuous violent protests.

Hundreds of residents in the West Rand township have taken to the streets, burning tyres and blockading roads.

They are demanded that the local municipality be disbanded.

The resident's association's Thabang Wesi said "the situation in Bekkersdal is very bad at the present moment. I can see people are moving around the township and assembling in groups at various hot spots".

Earlier in the month a municipal building was torched and some shops looted in one of the protests.

This led to government urging residents to keep protests peaceful and refrain from damaging property.
