CAPE TOWN - Jeffreys Bay tourism officials are urging the public to be cautious following a fatal shark attack in the area.

Burgert van der Westhuizen (74) was killed by a great white shark on Friday.

Beaches across the area were closed for a number of days as a result and reopened on Monday.

Jeffreys Bay tourism's Brenton Williams says, "I think you've got to take the conditions into account if you want to go swimming or surfing."

He says although incidents are few and far between, those entering the water should always be careful.

"Generally we haven't got that much of a problem, but the sea is where great whites live and we know that they're there."
