MARIKANA - Members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are being bussed in large numbers to the Marikana koppie in the North West where leader Julius Malema is due to launch the party on Sunday.

Thousands of people, young and old, are arriving at the Lonmin platinum mine where 34 miners were shot dead by the police during a labour strike in August last year.

Supporters from various provinces have been queuing from early in the morning to receive red EFF berets and t-shirts.

The crowd, many wearing red party regalia, have been dancing on the koppie and holding up banners.

Dozens of police vans are parked opposite the koppie monitoring proceedings.

Water cannons have also been dispatched to the area.

The newly formed party last week said it was ready to start working towards next year's elections.

The party was officially issued with a registration certificate by the Independent Electoral Commission on Monday, allowing them to run in the 2014 general elections.
