JOHANNESBURG - More than 70 families will be moving into the newly built Housing Village in Alexandra on Saturday morning.

Their new homes have been provided by disaster relief organisation the Gift of the Givers.

The organisation intervened and built the new village far away from the Juksei River which had frequently burst its banks in recent years with many properties being destroyed.

The organisation's Imtiaz Sooliman says every year they are called out to help with food-parcels and blankets.

He says they have put in driveways, a communal kitchen with 71 gas stoves and ablution blocks with hot water and flush toilets.

"In addition to that, we put in a whole mass of vegetable gardens for the community with a secured fence and 24-hour armed security," he says.

A new park with play equipment has also been provided to the area.

The village will officially be opened by Minister of Human Settlements Connie September at 11am.
