JOHANNESBURG - Transport Minister Dipuo Peters says she is considering banning heavy vehicles on local roads.

The minister made the comments one month after a fatal accident in Pinetown in which a runaway truck ploughed into four fully loaded minibus taxis and a car, killing 23 people.

The minister says she will conduct an extensive consultation process before making the decision.

"Reducing the reliance of freight on roads is going to be a process. The plan must respond to what South Africa needs and it must respond to what the National Development Plan says South Africa should be like."
