G4S-run Mangaung prison under administration
The prison has been placed under administration following violence at the Mangaung Correctional Centre.
JOHANNESBURG - The G4S-run private prison in the Free State has been placed under administration by the Department of Correctional Services following two weeks of violence.
Over the past two weeks at least five people, mostly wardens, have been stabbed at the Mangaung Correctional Centre and a senior female guard was taken hostage by prisoners.
The unrest follows the sacking of more than 300 Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) members from the prison.
Popcru's Free State Secretary Lawrence Msinto has called for the G4S contract with government to be cancelled.
"We are calling upon our government and the minister of correctional services to take over and dismiss those people because they haven't brought any output expected of them."
The company has now confirmed a regional department commissioner has been appointed as a temporary manager.
G4S says it doesn't believe it has lost control of the centre.
The department's reasons for appointing a temporary manager have not yet been disclosed, but it is confirmed the department will not be intervening in the ongoing labour dispute.
