CAPE TOWN - Cabinet on Thursday approved technical regulations aimed at governing exploration for shale gas in the Karoo.

Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu made the announcement at a post-Cabinet briefing on Thursday.

The minister says the regulations are aimed at mitigating any negative effects from a process that critics argue damages the environment and puts water supply at risk.

Shabangu said the regulations would be published next week.

The public will have 30 days to comment.

Shabangu maintains fracking will contribute to the country's economy.

But organisations such as Treasure Karoo Action Group remain opposed to the idea.
