CAPE TOWN - At least 3.3 million people have filed their returns so far this year, according to the South African Revenue Service (Sars).

A total of 1.6 million people have e-filed their tax returns and 1.622 million have filed their returns electronically at Sars branches.

Sars has only received 4,000 manual returns this year.

Sars Business Systems Group Executive Mark Kingon told the Redi Tlhabi Show that people are filing electronically.

"We've seen a total move to electronic which we are very happy with and 3.3 million people have filed their returns so far this year."

Kingon said they have introduced new systems to deal with the long volumes.

"As we kicked off on 1 July everybody swamped our offices because they are hoping for a refund and there were longer waiting periods which we don't like. But it's impossible to gear up for the huge volumes that come on those days and we will continue to do our best to deal with those volumes. We've introduced new systems to deal with them."

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan is expected to announce their target for this year during his mid-term budget in two weeks' time.
