CAPE TOWN - President Jacob Zuma on Monday wished Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu a happy birthday.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate turns 82 today.

The archbishop and his wife Leah have been celebrating with a series of community-based events near their Milnerton home in Cape Town.

The family handed over a sports ground to the Marconi Beam Primary School and collected gifts for the elderly over the weekend.

Presidency spokesperson Mac Maharaj said, "[The] Arch has been a peacemaker, a freedom fighter and he continues even in retirement to help build the unity of our nation."

Today, Tutu's foundation led a beach-cleaning initiative.
