JOHANNESBURG - Former police commissioner Jackie Selebi was not in violation of his parole conditions when he was spotted shopping in Pretoria on Sunday, the Department of Correctional Services revealed on Monday.

The Beeld newspaper on Monday published a photograph of Selebi at a shopping centre in Monument Park while on an outing to buy newspapers.

Selebi was sentenced to 15 years in prison for corruption, but was released on medical parole last year after serving just two years.

He has been undergoing dialysis for end-stage renal disease.

In the photograph, Selebi appeared to be in good health and was walking unaided at the centre.

He told the newspaper he was doing better and was hoping to recover further in the future.

The department's Teboho Mokoena says Selebi has done nothing wrong in terms of his parole as he is allowed out on Sundays.

"He is allowed to be outside his home between the hours of nine in the morning and five in the afternoon. Only in the instance where Mr Selebi has violated his parole conditions would the department intervene."
