Illegal miner dies in Rivelea

It is not yet clear whether there are more illegal miners who are trapped underground.

JOHANNESBURG - It is still unclear if any more bodies are trapped in a shaft near the Zamimpilo informal settlement in Rivelea after the body of an illegal miner was found on Saturday night.

The man who died during the illegal operations is believed to have been brought to the surface by other miners.

No arrests have been made.

Authorities say rescue operations are expected to be carried out today.

The police's Gordan Billings says, "The ground is too unstable to go into the mine so I can't confirm if there are any further bodies underground. The police will open an inquest docket."
