JOHANNESBURG - Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) has called on the Correctional Services Department to cancel its contract with the international security firm Group 4 Securicor (G4S).

There has been a series of stabbings and a hostage drama at the Mangaung Correctional Centre in the Free State with the company manages.

G4S is also facing looming penalties of more than a million rand from Correctional Services.

Popcru's Free State Secretary Lawrence Msinto says, "We are calling on the minister of Correctional Service to take over and dismiss those people because they have failed to deliver on their mandate."

Earlier this week, a female employee was held hostage by four inmates for 12 hours.

The woman was eventually rescued through a joint operation by the South African Police Service and G4S.

Security has since been beefed up at the facility.
