Disaster management probes deadly shack fires
Two women died in shack fires on Saturday morning while others were left homeless.
CAPE TOWN - Cape Town Disaster Risk Management says it is investigating separate shack fires in which two people were killed and dozens others displaced.
A woman lost her life and 32 others were left homeless after a blaze gutted their informal dwellings in Rasta Kamp in Somerset West on Saturday.
Meanwhile, another female died after her house burned to the ground in Schaapskraal.
Despite these incidents, disaster risk management's Wilfred Solomons-Johannes says there has been a steady decrease in the number of shack fires in the Cape Peninsula.
"Our response times and our capacity have been enhanced at all our response agencies to ensure that when we receive a call we respond effectively."
