JOHANNESBURG - Inmates involved in a hostage situation at the Mangaung Correctional Centre near Bloemfontein have not yet made any demands, the Department of Correctional Services said on Wednesday.

Officials confirmed four inmates are holding a woman against her will at the G4S security group-run facility.

The police's special task team is on the scene.

At least 100 G4S security personnel have also been called in to assist.

The department says they've not made any contact with the men.

It also says it remains unclear how the inmates were able to capture the woman.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) said three people were injured in the incident.

Popcru Provincial Secretary Lawrence Msinto also says there aren't adequate measures at the prison to handle the situation.

"There is one unit manager, one trainee that is not competent to handle the situation in the prison and a supervisor."
