PRETORIA - Joost van der Westhuizen has been accused of exploiting his medical condition to gain sympathy.

He approached the courts in a bid to prevent the publication of a book about his marriage to Amor Vittone.

Lawyers for author Gavin Prins made the allegations in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday afternoon.

The journalist's book exposes intimate details of the former Springbok captain's stormy marriage.

It was set to be released last week, but the wheelchair-bound van der Westhuizen says its publication could affect his health and dent his reputation.

But lawyers acting for Prins told the court that details of van der Westhuizen's controversial marriage are already in the public domain.

The former rugby captain was in court, with family members supporting him from the public gallery.

The case resumes on Friday.
