JOHANNESBURG - Security company G4S on Wednesday said it's doing everything in its power to rescue one of its employees being held hostage by inmates.

The female employee is being held hostage by four prisoners at the Mangaung Correctional Centre near Bloemfontein.

The woman was reportedly roped into helping guard the prisoners earlier this year following the dismissal of more than 300 Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) members.

The woman had still not been rescued and the firm says it's working with the SAPS Special Task Force to get her out.

G4S says it's made provision for hostage scenarios and staff members are equipped to deal with the situation.

The inmates keeping her captive have not yet made any demands.

Earlier on Wednesday, Popcru said three people had been injured and blamed lack of staff for the ordeal.
