JOHANNESBURG - There are calls for more clarity on why several senior academics from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) have resigned in recent months.

Two university deans have become the latest staff members to resign after a number of others, including the Dean of Commerce, Law & Management and the director of the Wits Business School.

The Wits academic staff association wants more details about the staff members' departure.

At the same time, academic Steven Friedman says the outcome of recent changes at the university will only be seen in the next few years.

Friedman says the university is going through a restructuring process and there may be several reasons why staff are leaving.

"There may be people who felt comfortable under the previous leadership and are nervous about what the new leadership may have in store. So I think it reflects quite an important period of change at Wits, whether it turns out to be a permanent change is something we'll only discover over the next couple of years."
