SA marks Older Persons Day
Social Development MEC Albert Fritz has urged the elderly to access their service centres.
CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Social Development MEC Albert Fritz on Tuesday encouraged the elderly who do not live in old age homes to access the department's service centres.
Today marks the United Nations (UN) International Day of Older Persons, which aims to recognise the role of elderly people in society and issues affecting them.
The MEC appealed to Capetonians to report abuse against the elderly.
Fritz adds older people don't need to lead lonely lives.
"We are looking at getting older persons, who are not in old age homes, in our service centres. [At the centres] they can take part in physical exercise and they can also get some company there."
At the same time, President Jacob Zuma has called on South Africans to protect the elderly.
He also called on communities to report abuse cases.
