CAPE TOWN - A newborn baby has been found dead in a rubbish bin along the Table View beachfront in Cape Town.

Two municipal workers made the gruesome discovery on Monday morning.

Police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk says it appears the mother gave birth in the early hours of this morning.

She wrapped the newborn in a shirt, placed it in a yellow plastic packet and dumped her in a rubbish bin, police said.

"A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death and when she was dumped in that dustbin. No arrests have been made as yet."

The Western Cape has recorded several incidents of baby dumping since January.

Provincial Social Development MEC Albert Fritz urged mothers to seek help instead of dumping their newborns.

He also warned authorities would deal with the culprits.
