Hawks mum on Gold Fields inquiry
DA asked for the investigation after allegations of criminal conduct by ANC's Baleka Mbete.
JOHANNESBURG - The Hawks have declined to discuss the contents of an inquiry into allegations of impropriety surrounding the allocation of mining rights at Gold Fields' South Deep Gold Mine.
The Democratic Alliance has asked for the matter to be investigated after allegations of criminal conduct involving ANC Chairperson Baleka Mbete emerged.
The opposition party also requested Mbete be investigated under the Prevention and Combatting of Corrupt Activities Act.
Hawks spokesperson Paul Ramaloko said the matter was being looked into, but declined to confirm whether the investigation involved Mbete.
He said a criminal case had not yet been opened.
"At this stage, no formal criminal case has been opened, however, we are looking into it. Once we are satisfied that a criminal case needs to be opened, the matter will still be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions."
