Invalid matric certificate inexcusable - DA
The DA has slammed KZN police after it emerged its spokesman has an alleged fake matric certificate.
JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it is inexcusable that former KwaZulu-Natal Police Spokesman Colonel Vincent Mdunge was found to have had an invalid matric certificate after 25 years of service.
It emerged late last week Mdunge resigned from his job with immediate effect after being told he would have to face an internal disciplinary hearing and criminal prosecution.
The former colonel says he decided to resign due to the serious nature of the allegations against him and to challenge them in court.
The DA's Dianne Kohler Barnard, who the Chairperson of the Parliament's portfolio committee on police, says the matter is a disgrace.
"Why aren't all education qualifications checked? We're at a stage where we cannot trust a single solitary member of the South African Police Service (SAPS) anymore. Every single qualification must be checked. Every single member must be checked."
This is the latest incident in which an officer has been forced to step down due to his background not being properly checked.
Gauteng's Police Commissioner Mondli Zuma was recently removed from office after it was found that he is facing criminal charges.
