JOHANNESBURG - The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) says it is willing to take full responsibility for the continued death toll if it fails to make the country's roads safer.

The corporation has launched a new campaign which will not only operate during the festive season.

RTMC acting COO Refilwe Mongale says South Africans can now hold it accountable to its promise to enhance road safety.

"We've made some bold pronouncements. You must follow up on that and hold us accountable."

The corporation says it is tired of always being called to investigate fatal road accidents.

RTMC acting CEO Gilberto Martins says most accidents are a result of faulty public transport.

He says its officials will now wait outside taxi ranks to test vehicles before passengers are loaded for a trip.

The corporation will also approach the Education Department to teach pupils about road safety from an early age.
