'Parents must check kids' bags'
Parents have been urged to check their children's bags after a teacher was shot last week.
JOHANNESBURG - The Free State Department of Education has urged parents to search their children's bags before dropping them off at school.
This follows last week's shooting of a teacher at Sasolburg High School by a 15-year-old pupil.
"Parents need to make sure their kids are going to school only with books and materials they need."
It's understood the pupil was arguing with a fellow pupil when he took out a gun.
The teacher is currently recovering at the Emfuleni MediClinic after undergoing surgery.
It's unclear why the pupil brought the gun to school, but he has since been arrested and taken for psychological assessments.
This was the second violent incident at a public school in a week.
Last week, a grade 8 pupil at Glenvista High School assaulted a male teacher, chased him out of the classroom and attacked him with a broom and a chair.
The footage was captured on a cellphone by a pupil and has since gone viral.
The Department of Basic Education has expressed concern saying society must step in and take charge.
