JOHANNESBURG - A Sasolburg school teacher who was shot by a pupil is undergoing surgery to have the bullet removed from his leg.

The teacher was shot by a 15-year-old at the Sasolburg High School yesterday. The pupil had brought his grandfather's gun to class.

The teenager who arrived at school yesterday with a firearm apparently started following some of his fellow pupils around with a gun in his hand.

One of the teachers tried to disarm him and was shot in the right leg. He's in a stable condition and is undergoing surgery at the Emfuleni Mediclinic to remove the bullet.

The pupil was arrested and has been taken for psychological assessment.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has expressed concern after another pupil from the Glenvista High School attacked his teacher with a broom.

She is calling on society and educators to take charge.
