JOHANNESBURG - Eyewitness News understands a Glenvista High School pupil accused of assaulting his teacher with a broom has been suspended pending a disciplinary hearing.

The incident, which took place at the southern Johannesburg school, was filmed on a cellphone by a classmate on Wednesday.

In the video, pupils are heard encouraging the learner to attack the teacher.

It is still not clear what sparked the attack.

The footage clearly shows the student hitting, kicking, biting and then assaulting his teacher with a broom and a chair.

The video also shows the boy repeatedly throwing the broom at the teacher as he walks away with what is believed to be the boy's backpack.

The Gauteng Department of Education has condemned the assault.

Spokesperson Gershwin Chuenyane said they instructed the school to suspend the pupil with immediate effect.

He says the teacher will be provided with counselling, adding, "We'd like to commend the teacher for being a professional."

The Community Policing Forum's Michele Pelser says the community is outraged.

"The children of the school are very angered at what happened and obviously the parents are very angered because you don't expect this kind of thing happening at a school."

Eyewitness News received the video from a concerned parent, Jonathan Pillay, and another member of the community who asked not to be named.

The school is yet to make a statement on the attack.

This incident comes in the wake of two other cases at Gauteng schools.

One incident involves a pupil who was allegedly forced to drink his urine and another where a mother allegedly head-butted a boy who had fought with her daughter.
