'International Relations DG faces R500m probe'
International Relations denies its DG is on special leave due to claims of irregular expenditure.
JOHANNESBURG - The International Relations Department has denied reports its Director General has been placed on special leave following allegations of irregular expenditure of over R500 million.
The Beeld newspaper has reported it's seen confidential documents from an internal audit, which found that R530 million from the African Renaissance Fund (ARF) has been irregularly spent, allegedly by Jerry Matjila.
The newspaper says International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane requested an independent inquiry after the allegations surfaced.
The department's Clayson Monyela says Matjila is still at work, But declined to comment on whether the allegations against Matjila are true.
South Africa uses the ARF to fund humanitarian aid, mainly to African states.
