SA roads to get R9bn boost
The Transport Ministry has set aside almost R9 billion to rehabilitate and maintain SA's roads.
CAPE TOWN - Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said on Wednesday her department has set aside almost R9 billion to spend on rehabilitating and maintaining roads for the 2013/2014 financial year.
During a road safety briefing in Parliament, Peters said her department loses more than R300 billion in dealing with road accidents each year.
The minister said there's a need for more visible traffic policing on the roads.
"We urge all of those who form part of the roads construction value chain to always prioritise safety for every road they build, from the design to the actual construction of the road. We are equally encouraged that our roads have been designed to appreciate and accommodate the important element of safety."
