Rhodes escapes with one-match ban
WP flank Michael Rhodes is banned for one week after stamping on Blue Bulls skipper Jono Ross.
CAPE TOWN - Western Province flank Michael Rhodes has escaped with a lenient one-match ban for stamping on Blue Bulls skipper Jono Ross in Saturdays match.
A South African Rugby Union (Saru) judicial officer found there was no intent to stamp on Ross's face and that Rhodes was trying to regain his balance.
There was however sufficient negligence to suspend him for stamping, but it was deemed a lower-entry offence and therefore resulted in just a one-week ban.
That means Rhodes misses Friday night's clash against Griquas at Newlands in Cape Town.
The suspension forced Western Province coach Allister Coetzee to pick two under-21 loose forwards in Rayn Smid and Josh Katzen.
Rohan Kitshoff and Rynhardt Elstadt start at 6 and 7 and De Kock Steenkamp retains the captaincy with Deon Fourie still injured.
Demetri Catrakilis makes the match day squad for the first time since his return from the Kings and warms the bench with Gary van Aswegen out with a knee injury.
The match kicks off at 19:10 on Friday evening.
