Krejcir's fresh extradition hearing delayed

JOHANNESBURG - Czech businessman Radovan Krejcir has won a court bid to delay a fresh extradition hearing against him.

But the court has only given him three months.

Krejcir has been fighting to stay in South Africa since he was arrested six years ago.

The Kempton Park Magistrate's Court this morning gave the businessman until December to assess how much headway his asylum application makes.

He has been fighting attempts to send him home where he faces political persecution and possible death.

The Czech businessman argued this morning that a new extradition hearing can't proceed while his battle for refugee status continues to run its course.

His lawyers told the court if Krejcir is granted asylum he cannot, by law, be sent home.

But the National Prosecuting Authority argued the two hearings can run concurrently and his victory in securing asylum is far from certain.

Today's hearing strikes in the middle of these two arguments, giving Krejcir an extra three months.

The court has also ordered him to provide a comprehensive status update in December, when a new postponement will be considered.

Krejcir recently survived an alleged assassination attempt involving a car kitted out with homemade shotguns which were being remotely controlled.
