CAPE TOWN - Members of Parliament (MPs) are expected to meet today and choose 12 new South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board members from 36 shortlisted candidates.

Parliament appointed an interim board earlier this year following a mass exodus of members.

Chaired by Ben Ngubane, the board was dogged by infighting and controversy.

Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Communications Chairman Sikhumbuzo Kholwane said he hopes MPs will be able to agree on 12 names today.

"The interview process went very well and it was highly competitive. I think it's a headache for the committee to get to the final 12 because most of the candidates were up to it. It will be interesting to see how we finally get to the results."

Some of the candidates interviewed included Athletics South Africa (ASA) administrator Zola Majavu and Kate Skinner, a vocal critic of the SABC.
