Metrorail condemns robber attack
Two suspected robbers were stoned, beaten and tied to a train track to die by angry residents.
CAPE TOWN - Metrorail in the Western Cape on Saturday condemned an attack on two suspected robbers who were left on the railway tracks to die near the Philippi train station.
Some disgruntled residents reportedly stoned and beat the men before tying them to the train tracks this week.
It's understood the residents accused the pair of stealing a cellphone and some money.
While one of the men has died the other is still recovering in hospital after being hit by a train.
Metrorail's Mthuthuzeli Swartz said this behaviour cannot be allowed.
"For me to learn that these were members of the community who used Metrorail's infrastructure to commit such a crime is very disturbing. I would like to start by condemning this action in no uncertain terms."
