Another truck collision kills four
A truck collision on the East Rand has claimed the lives of four people while six others are critical.
JOHANNESBURG - Another truck collision - this time on the East Rand - has claimed the lives of four people while six others are critical.
In the latest incident, a truck collided with a vehicle on the N3 South near the Heidelberg offramp.
Reports say it appears as if the truck collided with the vehicle before it crashed down an embankment - dragging the vehicle with it.
Another vehicle was also found several meters away with severe damage.
Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesperson William Ntladi says one person had to be airlifted to hospital.
Ntladi says the cause of the accident is not yet known.
"We are currently trying to free a trapped patient from the wreckage of a truck."
Er24's Werner Vermaaks says emergency services had to use the jaws-of-life to free the passangers.
"They landed two helicopters which airlifted two people from the cabin of the truck. They are in critical condition. Authorities are investigating the cause of accident."
The N3 South is partially closed.
Reports on Thursday night emerged of a massive crash in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal, which left at least 24 dead and many injured.
The accident took place when a truck ploughed into four minibus taxis and a car at high speed at the base of Field's Hill. This stretch of road, a downhill slope, is notorious for crashes.
Netcare 911's Chris Botha said the scene was "horrific", adding, "Really, it can only be described as a disaster scene."
