SA basketball league launched
The newly formed Basketball National League will begin on 27 September.
JOHANNESBURG - Basketball South Africa and the Department of Sport and Recreation on Thursday announced that the newly formed Basketball National League will begin on 27 September.
The league will consist of 11 franchises which will be divided into two conferences.
The games will be televised live after officials secured a five-year deal with SuperSport.
Sport and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula says this is a step in the right direction for Basketball SA which is currently under administration.
"This is an improvement to the sporting code that is mostly loved by the youth of South Africa. It also gives options to sport lovers. They can now broaden their options."
Mbalula says he is pleased that yet another sporting code will be gaining prominence in the country.
"The basketball league is no longer a theory. The league will actually kick-off in South Africa in a big way."
