Post-mortem conducted on dumped baby
The baby boy’s body was found covered in sewage from a blocked drain in Galeshewe.
CAPE TOWN - Northern Cape police on Wednesday said they are awaiting the post-mortem results of a baby discovered in a drain.
The baby boy's body was found covered in sewage from a blocked drain in Galeshewe, Kimberley at the weekend.
The infant was found by a local.
It appears the body was pushed to the surface as the sewage overflowed from the blocked drain.
Police spokesperson Andrea Cloete says it is not yet clear whether the body is that of a fully developed foetus, a stillborn child or a baby who died after birth.
"A community member discovered the body. The community member immediately contacted the police. The body was taken to the mortuary in Kimberley."
Northern Cape Department of Health Spokesperson Lulu Mxekezo says it is disappointing these incidents still occur.
"It is shocking that our women are still reverting to unsafe methods to terminate unwanted pregnancies. In all our facilities, we provide family planning methods."
