CAPE TOWN - The first five beneficiaries of a multi-million rand housing project in Mitchells Plain were handed the keys to their new homes on Monday.

Unlike government's Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) model, both government and the beneficiary contribute towards the bond.

Western Cape Human Settlements MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela attended the event earlier.

He said people need to contribute towards their homes.

"We've got to instill this culture of paying from our people."

Madikizela spoke frankly, saying government simply does not have the money to give everyone a free house.

He urged the beneficiaries to ensure their bond payments are up to date to avoid losing their homes.

The Western Cape has a housing backlog which dates back 20 years.

Several residents from informal settlements have taken to the streets in recent weeks demanding housing and basic sanitation.
