Zuma appoints NPA head
The DA welcomes Zuma's appointment of attorney Mxolisi Nxasana as head of the NPA.
JOHANNESBURG - The DA says it welcomes President Jacob Zuma's appointment of attorney Mxolisi Nxasana as head of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and that it looks forward to learning more about him.
Zuma made the appointment yesterday.
He's also appointed advocate Vas Soni as head of the Special Investigating Unit.
The presidency says Mxolisi Nxasana has held several leadership positions in KwaZulu-Natal. The DA's Justice spokesperson Dean Smuts says this could bode well for him.
"I hope that this indicates that he will bring the requisite independence to the task of prosecuting without fear or favour."
While Casac Chase Bophuthatswana says it's time for the appointment process itself to change.
"We do believe that there has to be a public debate about the nature and the processes involved with regards to appointing people to such positions."
