CAPE TOWN - The search for a new Auditor General (AG) has begun in earnest.

Current AG Terence Nombembe's term ends in November and it's understood approximately 90 people have applied for the position.

On Tuesday, a special committee of Parliament decided on a shortlist of six applicants.

Committee Chairman Thaba Mufamadi explained why it's important to find the right person.

"The AG is basically a moral compass of government expenditure. The success or failure of government's ability to deliver depends on how we can monitor our own resources."

Interviews will be held next week.
