Red Cross Hospital opens new centre
The Child Safety and Injury Prevention Centre was launched on Wednesday.
CAPE TOWN - The Red Cross Children's Hospital has opened a new centre aimed at improving safety for children.
It says compared to the United Kingdom, children in South Africa are 25 times more likely to end up in a hospital's trauma unit.
The hospital's Child Safety and Injury Prevention Centre was launched on Wednesday.
With childhood injuries on the increase, the Centre could not have come at a better time.
Head of the Trauma Unit Sebastian van As says it is Africa's first and only dedicated centre preventing child-related injuries.
"If a child has been run over by a car, the best surgeon in the world is not always able to make it better anymore."
The centre will also focus on educating parents and caregivers on how to make the areas children frequent safer.
