CAPE TOWN - Communications Minister Yunus Carrim has urged Parliament to choose wisely when it comes to selecting new South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board members.

The old board was dissolved after infighting which saw all but one member resign.

An interim board was hastily appointed, but its term expires at the end of next month.

Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Communications is in Johannesburg concluding interviews with 36 candidates for the 12 non-executive positions today.

Carrim had a message for the Members of Parliament (MPs) deciding who should sit on what will be the fifth SABC board in as many years.

"We just cannot afford to have a board that doesn't function efficiently and effectively."

He says the new board members should have the required technical expertise and experience and an understanding of the SABC's mandate.

The minister says the board should not be used to dispense patronage adding that it's important that the new board members can work together.
