Violence erupted among striking construction workers on Rivonia Road on Monday.

SANDTON - Eyewitness News understands seven people were wounded after being stabbed on Monday morning at a Murray & Roberts construction site on Rivonia Road in Sandton.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has condemned the violent strike action, saying if its members were to blame they would face disciplinary action.

The union announced last Thursday that at least 90,000 construction workers would down tools this week, demanding a 13 percent wage increase. The employer is offering 7.

The NUM says they will launch an investigation into the violence.

"We will investigate the reported violence and should we find that any of our members have been part of the violence, drastic measures will be taken [because] the NUM has zero tolerance when it comes to issues of violence," said spokesman Lesiba Seshoka.

The police's Kim Cloete says the area has been cleared but they will continue to monitor the situation amid fears that the strikers will return to the site.
