Fordsburg residents demand housing
2,000 Fordsburg residents were evicted from the Newtown Urban Village building.
JOHANNESBURG - The South African Communist Party (SACP) is calling on the Johannesburg Housing Company to return the Newtown Urban Village building to Fordsburg residents.
In July some 2,000 Fordsburg residents were left destitute after being evicted from this building after the Johannesburg Housing Company bought it.
But the company claims that residents were illegally occupying the building.
The SACP's Jacob Mamabolo says residents protested outside the housing company's offices yesterday - demanding them to hand the building back to residents.
"The property must be returned at the price of about R28 million which is the price at which they bought the property. We are firmly opposed to the price of the building because we don't think they have added any value to the building for them to get market prices."
