Massive crystal meth bust at OR Tambo
The Hawks have seized around R5 million worth of drugs at OR Tambo International Airport.
JOHANNESBURG - The Hawks have seized around R5 million worth of drugs at Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport.
Police at the airport and customs found around 20 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine in unclaimed luggage that had come off a flight from Abu Dhabi on Thursday.
"No arrests have been made. However, we believe this will lead us to closing down on the syndicate involved in the matter," said Hawks spokesperson Paul Ramaloko.
The drug bust appears to be the largest drug bust made at a port of entry in South Africa.
Last month, officials recovered crystal methamphetamine worth almost R43 million at OR Tambo International.
At the time, the South African Revenue Services (Sars) said this was the single largest bust made at a port of entry in South Africa.
Two women flying in from Tanzania were arrested after being found in possession of 150 kilograms of drugs.
The suspects are in police custody.
