JOHANNESBURG - The parents of Reeva Steenkamp, June and Barry, have described the past week as emotional and painful.

In a statement released on Friday night, the Steenkamps thanked the public and media for showing restraint during this difficult time.

Monday marked the birthday of their daughter Reeva, who was shot dead by paralympian Oscar Pistorius.

On the same day, the athlete made a brief appearance in the Pretoria Magistrates court.

The blade runner is facing a murder charge after he shot and killed Reeva on Valentine's Day this year.

This is the first time the Steenkamp's have communicated to the nation in recent months.

They also appealed to the public not to contact them directly as they were dealing with the death of their daughter privately.

Pistorius' murder trial begins in March 2014.
